Museum Week The Professionals: Collections Management

Museum Week is an opportunity to share our objects and the inner workings of The Hunterian with a wider audience. Today we focus on The Professionals, the people who bring you the museum and gallery you know and love.

Managing a Museum Collection

Head of Collections Management, Malcolm Chapman, answered a few questions for us.

Why did you want to work in collections management?

I always wanted to work in a museum (the old “what goes on behind that door” question) and working in collections management you get to see almost every aspect of museum work, and certainly every object.Three students with objects and member of Hunterian staff

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I enjoy the variety of work – really no day is the same as any other… one day you may be installing an exhibition, the next planning object moves or working on the collections database.

Which objects/artwork have made an impression on you, and why?

A career highlight has to be the Sutton Hoo shoulder-clasps in the British Museum which are simply stunning and still in perfect condition.

From The Hunterian it has to be one of the Neolithic stone maceheads from Orkney.
